ACTC Tournament Philosphy

Tournaments are one of the most enjoyable features of membership at ACTC. They are primarily organized by our volunteers, usually board members. Club tournaments are open to full members of the club in good standing only.

We have 2 goals which we strive for in all our tournaments. The first goal emphasizes socializing, fun, sharing food, meeting new members and enjoying play with a wide cross section of members. The second goal emphasizes the enjoyment of competitive tennis under tournament conditions.

The "social" tournaments are: Opening Day Round Robin Tournament; Blind Draw; and the Davis Cup Tournament. These informal tournaments are meant to introduce members and especially new members to the club. The emphasis is on fun rather than competition. They are designed to give everyone a fun time and depending on the luck of the draw, a chance to win or do well in the tournament. There is no seeding of players to optimize a competitive mix, as is found in our other club competitive tournaments.

The "competitive" tournaments are: Men's & Ladies Singles, Ladies & Men's Doubles and the Year End Mixed Doubles Tournament. Players are seeded for these tournaments and the competition can be very keen. For the players moving into the semi finals and finals, its a major physical challenge due to the amount of tennis played. All members are encouraged to participate as a way to build experience and test your skills under tournament conditions. Of course there is a social aspect built into these tournaments, especially the year end Mixed Doubles event which is followed by our year end celebration.

It's helpful if members bear in mind our two tournament goals. It's especially important when tournaments with a social emphasis are organized. Our more experienced and highly competitive players need to remember the overall purpose of these tournaments is fun not winning. The ACTC Board in overseeing our Tournament schedule, strives to meet the diverse needs of all our members, not just our best club players.

One new idea that we may try out this year is a tournament organized for our Monday Night and Wednesday Night House League players. This tournament will give many beginning players a chance to have fun in semi - competitive event.
